Fonts: What are they and why do we need them?

Image
We see them a lot. We see so many typefaces, wordmarks, fonts, and everything else in between. They're also a way to distinguish something from the other, like packaging, advertisements, and even signage. But what's the sole purpose of having fonts and why do we need them? The purpose of fonts is to give a unique visual perspective. Fonts can set the mood, the tone, and the atmosphere. Fonts can give out visual clues about the order in which the document should be read, and which parts are more important than others. They can also be used to control how long it takes for someone to read a document. Without using fonts, it would either cause legibility issues, or it would not strike the tone with others.  Now, the question is: why do we need fonts? Typography has two main purposes in Design. The first main purpose is to promote legibility. It allows us to read things clearly without having the need to either squint to read or get lost and/or confused as to what we are reading...

Unpopular Opinion: The BART station in Pittsburg, CA, is designed terribly

Image
I reside in Pittsburg, CA. To get to San Francisco State University, I would take the BART train to SF. Currently, I take the BART station in Antioch, CA, but before that I used to take the Pittsburg Center station to get to San Francisco. And I was not pleased with the experience at all, even after riding it for about a year.  This BART station opened up in May 2018, and it's the second BART station in Pittsburg. The first one was the Pittsburg/Bay Point station, which opened up in December 1996.  The train ride was fine, but there are issues with the way the stations were designed. Pittsburg Center station parking lot on Bliss Ave. Note that you'd have to cross the street to enter the concourse The entrance to the concourse, surrounded by the bridge First of all, the BART station was constructed on a pedestrian bridge on the intersection of Railroad Ave and Harbor St (literally on the highway). Due to this, the parking lot was constructed on the other side off of Bliss Ave.;...

Who's in charge of Tour Designs?

Image
DISCLAIMER: I wrote this based on concerts I went to and the Design flaws I have noticed while at those shows, so take this blog post with a grain of salt. Recently, I went to see BeyoncĂ© at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. The show was AMAZING. BeyoncĂ© served vocals, her stage presence was immaculate, and everything was done in an amazing and timely fashion  However, I could not help but notice some Design issues, mostly involving the stage. The second that you step into the venue where the show is held, you are greeted with a stage that shows the colors of the LGBTQIA+ Progress Flag in the form of Color Bars (you know, the ones you'd see on TV). At one point, the bars cut to a background of Pink Clouds and that's when the show starts.  While the backdrops were not an issue, the main issue was the size of the stage. Since we were sitting in the Nosebleed section (the top seating area of the stadium), we were able to see the entire stage, but personally for a stadium show...

A Warhol-ean Inspiration

Image
One of the artists that I have gotten inspiration from is Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol is an artist who is well known for creating portraits (such as the Marlyn Monroe Diptych, Campbell's Soup Cans, the Mickey Mouse Quadrant, and so on) using bold and outrageous colors. Most of these prints are popular today, as they can be seen in one way or another, either on T-shirts, Wall Hangings, Books, and other memorabilia. This shows that even after Warhol's passing (he passed away in 1987), his work is still well-known and enjoyed by the masses; especially since he was one of the first artists to adopt this style.  Aside from art, Andy Warhol has also directed and produced art films; one of his most popular art films is the film "Empire", which mostly consists of an eight-hour footage shot of the Empire State Building. He also worked in the music industry, producing works for the punk band "the Velvet Underground". By dabbing into projects outside of his usual repert...
