Is AI ruining Design?
Earlier this year I have been hearing a lot about AI. AI (short for "Artificial Intelligence") is the ability of computers and other machines to perform tasks that would be done by humans. Of course, we heard about ChatGPT and how AI is going to (potentially) become frequent in how we live, even in the things we use.
But is AI ruining Design?
In short: the answer is No. It would not replace Graphic Design but rather enhance and complement the designs of various designers, making it effective for designers.
In an article by Dragonfly AI (a company known for its software that allows people to use AI for their designs), they write that AI software, like DALL.E & CLIP, uses GTP-3 to "automatically create designs based on Human Concepts", and that the AI Design tool can "generate several design concepts within seconds." But they also have doubts that it could operate without "any manual input as it lacks the human intuition to understand the concept or design" (DragonflyAI.com).
Here are a few examples of Designs produced by AI:
Another example is this car designed by AI, which was done as car manufacturers wanted to see if AI could design cars better than humans. And undeniably, this car looks Designed very well, but it makes me wonder if it will have any omnipresence in the car industry in the future.
It's understandable why some people may be concerned about how AI would affect Design in the near future, as AI is known for producing things in the same capacity as other humans, but as Dragonfly AI pointed out, it's highly unlikely that's the case in Design. While the idea of AI sounds scary, it'll be interesting to see how it will pan out in the near future.
